Founder spotlight: Preparing health care teams for the moments that matter most

Canada's health care system is facing a workforce readiness challenge. Clinical teams are stretched, educators have limited capacity, and some of the most critical skills are learned only after clinicians encounter high-pressure situations in practice. CORE Innovation exists because doing nothing has a cost: a preventable infection, a burned out physician, an idea that leaves Canada. We turn that invisible cost into a clear, evidenced, fast way forward.

The greatest gap exists in rare but high-stakes moments, such as medical emergencies, challenging patient interactions, and complex clinical scenarios that are difficult to recreate in traditional training environments. When opportunities to practice are limited, readiness can vary, increasing stress for health care professionals and creating risk for both patients and care teams.

Aequilibrium (AEQ) saw an opportunity to address this challenge through immersive learning technology designed to help health care learners build confidence and competency before stepping onto the clinic floor.

Turning an idea into a health care solution

AEQ had already developed workforce competency platforms for industries including finance, customer service, and higher education. Bringing that technology into health care, however, required a deeper understanding of a highly regulated and complex sector.

Supported by CORE Innovation at the CHEO Research Institute, AEQ worked to transform an innovative concept into a health care focused commercialization strategy.

Rather than starting from scratch, CORE Innovation helped the team build upon its existing expertise while introducing the realities of health care adoption, stakeholder engagement, and market validation. Through structured strategy sessions, market research, and business model development, AEQ challenged assumptions, clarified priorities, and refined its approach.

Most importantly, the AEQ team gained access to health care educators, hospital leaders, mentors, and innovators across CORE Innovation's network. Those conversations helped validate market needs, uncover adoption barriers, and identify where the solution could create the greatest value.

“The program was immensely helpful to our efforts in understanding and diving into the health care sector. Access to experts in the field representing entrepreneurs, ideal customers and mentors expanded our understanding of the underlying pains behind health care workforce readiness and helped us crystallize how we should help solve it.”

Building readiness through immersive practice

This led to the creation of VR4Health, an AI-powered virtual reality training platform designed to provide health care learners with access to realistic practice experiences whenever and wherever they need them.

AEQ describes the approach as “High intensity interval training (HIIT) of reality” for health care, with short, intensive learning experiences that allow users to practice clinical and communication skills in immersive environments.

Using existing educational content such as textbooks, slide decks, and assessment rubrics, institutions can create customized virtual learning experiences aligned with their own training objectives. Learners then engage with AI-driven characters and environments that respond dynamically to their decisions and actions.

The platform is being developed to support applications including:

  • High-acuity clinical scenarios, such as medical emergencies and critical patient events
  • Code response training
  • De-escalation and workplace safety training
  • Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) preparation

By enabling learners to practice in realistic virtual environments, AEQ aims to help institutions expand access to experiential learning while generating valuable insights into learner performance and preparedness.

Looking ahead

Equipped with a clearer understanding of the health care landscape and a growing network of sector partners, AEQ is continuing to advance VR4Health through collaborations with hospitals, academic institutions, and professional associations.

Think your innovation could be next?

The 2026 CORE Innovation Call for Innovation opened on September 14, offering health innovators the support, connections, and expertise needed to move promising ideas forward. This year, CORE Innovation is partnering with the CHEO Research Institute's Precision Child and Youth Mental Health (PCYMH) Collaboratory to support health technology founders developing innovative solutions in child and youth mental health.

Too many innovations never reach the people they were designed to help. Not because they are bad ideas, but because the path from invention to adoption can be difficult to navigate. CORE Innovation helps innovators bridge the gap between ideas to adoption.
